NEWS 09/07/06

The Greathouse Gathering in Philadelphia was a great success. Everyone had a terrific time.

High point of the trip was the Johannes Herbergs diary/journal entry stating that Hermen Grothaus was from Bielefeld, Germany.

Some of the other trip high points were the tours of the original Greathouse residences, St. Michael's Lutheran Church, the Gravesites of Herman and ---ry Grothaus, viewing the records of Springfield Township Historical Society, and researching at the Germantown Historical Society. Our tour guides were very informative and all had knowledge of the Grothaus family.

Springfield Manor was more beautiful than we had imagined!! The legend goes that George Washington stopped at this home to water his horses at one time. This scene is depicted in a painting on the wall in the back of the Manor house. The home owner welcomed us into her home and was so pleasant and hospitable. They are so interested in the home and it's history and the restoration of it.

We would also like to thank all that attended the Gathering. It was just wonderful to meet new Greathouse cousins and to find in the true Greathouse tradition there really are wonderful people we are proud to call cousins. We all pleasantly rallied for the cause, sharing, conversing and researching. The hotel was very accommodating, we ate wonderful food and had lots of fun together. Thank you all, it was a pleasure to meet you and get to know you. Undoubtedly we will be keeping in touch.

The steering committee is already discussing and making plans for next year's excursion. There is much research to still be done in the Philadelphia-Germantown area. So hopefully, next year we plan to return. Our future plan is to gather in areas of great importance to the migration of the Greathouse family.
